• Avoid white clothing because the portrait background for Portugal Passport Picture is light gray.
• It is best to remove your glasses to eliminate any chances of rejection because of reflections.
• Your expression must be neutral with no frowning or smiling.
• You should be looking directly at the camera. Pictures even slightly in profile have been known to be rejected.
• Your face should fill between 70 to 80% of the photo area.
• Portuguese Passport photographs must be taken by a professional studio.

• Renew your Portuguese passport at a Portuguese Consulate in the U.S. A government-issued passport grants Portuguese citizens international travel and legal exit and entry into the country of Portugal. It also serves as proof of identification and citizenship for the Portuguese national entitled to it. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to make sure you passport is valid for the entire duration of your travels. You can even renew your Portuguese passport in the United States at an Embassy of Portugal in your jurisdiction.

1. Locate the Portuguese Embassy or Consulate nearest you (see Resources) as all passport renewal requests must be processed in person. Due to the high volume of applicants, it is highly recommended that you schedule an appointment before proceeding with the application process.
   
2. Complete the passport renewal form you receive from the Consulate and submit your current, undamaged Portuguese passport along with a color passport photo 4.5-by-3.5 cm in size. It must be a frontal portrait of the face taken against a white background, without any glasses or anything worn on the head. The photo must be taken no more than 30 days previous to your application being processed.
   
3. Provide proof of your Portuguese nationality by presenting any of the following documents: original birth certificate, certificate of nationality, declaration of nationality, or naturalization card.
   
4. Return to the Portuguese Embassy and follow the consular's instructions on where to submit your application documents and fees. The passport renewal fee can be made payable by credit card, cash or money order. Immediate processing is not available, but you can request expedited service at an extra cost. Otherwise, expect your new Portuguese passport to be processed within two weeks.
